Designing Safe Cities For Women
December 20, 2021
In the last few years, crime against women in the world has increased to a great extent. According to the statistics, it is found that every two out of three women have suffered around two to five times sexual harassment in the last year. According to the survey of women, it is found that women are losing their confidence in police.Women are harassed not only in the night or evening but also in the day time at their home, working places, or other places like street, club, etc. It is found through the survey that the reason of sexual harassment is the lack of gender-friendly environment and improper functional infrastructure such as consumption of alcohol and drugs in open area, lack of adequate lighting, safe public toilets, sidewalks, lack of effective police service, lack of properly working helpline numbers, etc. A huge percentage of women have no faith that police can curb such harassment cases. There is an urgent need to understand and solve this problem of women safety so that they can also grow equally like men in their own country.
Women are leaders everywhere you look—from the CEO who runs a Fortune 500 company to the housewife who raises her children and heads her household. Our country was built by strong women, and we will continue to break down walls and defy stereotypes.” (Nancy Pelosi). It has become common to throw acid on a walking girl and kidnap anyone to satisfy their desire for a physical relationship. According to statistics, a woman is raped every 20 minutes countries’ like India. After Seeing the increasing atrocities against women in the last few years, we cannot say that women are completely safe in our country. Women feel insecure especially if they want to go out alone. This research paper contains information on how to design a safer environment for women. We all are aware of the lack of safety measures, this paper talks about it in a much detailed manner. A survey was conducted for this paper to gain more information about the point of view of people on women safety. The results received were divided in two parts one was the opinion of the men and other was of the women of the society. On the basis of results it can be clearly predicted women feel more unsafe as compared to men. The depth of the issue is felt much deeply by a female than a male. Women are the target who face such threats on daily basis, the one who is suffering is a female so the amount of fear is much more in women. Where as the men are not able to relate to it after a certain point which can be seen as per the results.
Further the paper focuses on the policy recommendations to solve the issues faced by women on a larger scale.Local government can come up with several ways to protect every individual of the city for the betterment of the society. With coming times and developing infrastructure it is easy to build solutions to such issues. Women safety is an issue since forever and it’s high-time the government, the people and every single person living in the city works toward it to make it a better place for livelihood.
